In my ever-continuing search of ebay for interesting saxophones, I came across an absolute classic. In fact, it might be the de-facto Jazz and R&B tenor saxophone. It is the King Super 20. This insturment comes from a long lineage of saxophone innovation from the H.W. White company dating back to their first “King” models starting in 1916. While some of the early H.W. White saxophones don’t have the best reputation, the Zephyr and later the King Super 20 are highly regarded as some of the finest saxophones you can buy. The King Super 20 often goes for thousands on eBay and many say that they put the Selmer Mark VI to shame. I don’t know about that, but the King Super 20 is a fantastic tenor saxophone and if you can snag one for under $1,000 go for it!
